Advocacy Intern
Internship Overview
Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center (DARCC) internships are unpaid. Our internships are designed to provide educational and professional development opportunities, allowing interns to gain insight into their fields of study.
DARCC is committed to the prevention of sexual violence and compassionately serving those impacted by it. DARCC’s comprehensive program includes counseling, crisis intervention and advocacy for those whose lives have been affected by sexual violence. DARCC is also committed to social change through prevention, education and outreach programs to the community.
The Advocacy Intern will assist in providing 24/7 crisis services to survivors of sexual violence through hotline and hospital advocacy. Advocacy Interns will help with legal advocacy accompaniment and provide administrative support to ensure that the advocacy needs of DARCC clients are met.
Responsibilities for Advocacy Interns:
Complete the 40-hour certified Sexual Assault Advocate Training Program.
Answering crisis calls on the 24-hour crisis line.
Providing hospital accompaniment at Texas Health Presbyterian Dallas, Texas Health Hospital Rockwall, Baylor, and Medical City for any survivor who presented for a SANE exam.
Providing law enforcement and judicial accompaniment to survivors requiring assistance.
Maintains and updates agency resource guides to meet the needs of survivors and their families.
Assists in creating reference materials on various Crime Victim Assistance programs.
Complete all required documentation of services provided and hours worked.
Assisting with various projects around the office.
Serve as a mentor for incoming volunteers and act as a support for on-call volunteers.
Must believe in, support, and act in accordance with the agency’s mission statement and strategic goals.
Ability to maintain non-judgmental, accepting attitudes towards people of any race, religion, ethnicity, sexuality, age, appearance, or economic status.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications for Advocacy Interns:
Undergraduate or Graduate Student pursuing a degree in a social services related field or comparable life experience.
Must demonstrate excellence with computers and other electronic devices and agency software needed to fulfill responsibilities.
Ability work alongside a diverse group of employees and simultaneously work toward many company initiatives at once.
